The Attack

According to the Chinвід 2(“.” ^{2} The stabbing occurred on Wednesday, and local police detained a 44-year-old man with the last name Zhong. The reason for the attack is unknown up to the present time. Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa described the attack as ‘despicable’, and demanded an explanation from the Chinese Government. The nationality of the victim has not been officially verified but the Shenzhen Japanese School is a school that mainly accepts students of Japanese nationality.

Historical Significance

The attack also took place within proximity of the anniversary of the Mukden Incident that occurred in 1931 during which Japan invaded Manchuria and gave them a good excuse for warring with China for years. As for the causality between that occurrence and the stabbing, only assumptions can be made, whereas animosity between the two countries is no secret.

Escalating Concerns

This murder is not the first of its kind that has taken place in this country; there are so many of them. In June another knife attack happened in Suzhou where a Japanese mother and her child became the victims. One of the Chinese sources claimed that a Chinese national was killed in the process of trying to defend them. The Japanese embassy has responded to the case and called on the Chinese Government to avoid any attack from foreigners.

During a press briefing, spokesman for Chinese Foreign Ministry, Lin Jian was confident that necessary steps would be taken to safeguard all foreign nationals in China. However, there is a worrying trend that suggestions of nationalism in China may enhance violence against Japanese citizens.

Safety Measures

What the Japanese government has done is make arrangements to protect its people in China. In the first half of the current year, Tokyo sought 120 billion yen from the South Asian country. Five million to employ security guards for school buses in China showing that Japanese citizens are still in peril.

Given concerning Shenzhen incident, some Japanese schools in China have increased security measures and suggest that parents remain alert. For instance, the Guangzhou Japanese School has suspended some of its events and also raised an alert, specifically discouraging parents from speaking Japanese loudly in public places.

Tense Diplomatic Relations

China-Japan relations have always been sour for many decades due to historical issues and struggles over territories. These recent violent attacks only piled up the anxiety. It needs to be noted that several observers, including former Japanese diplomat Shingo Yamagimi, recently pointed to China’s education system that teaches its citizens to hate Japan, as one of the possible reasons for these actions.

Although China has denied such attacks as acts of terrorism, and separate occurrences, both governments are getting worried by the increasing rate of these incidences in China. As investigations go on, both are under a lot of pressure to protect citizens from such incidents as this in the future.

Public Reaction

There has been a reaction on the Chinese-based social media platforms where the public has condemned the violence to some extent. One comment given was ‘violence is not patriotism’ an indication of the view of people who are worried about escalating hostility between the two countries.

That is why instances such as this one, signify the fact that relations between China and Japan are very unpredictable and matters need to be resolved without resorting to aggression.
