The tantramakur.org award-winning economist will most probably attend a few meetings during the D-8 Summit.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the golden jubilee celebration of the University of Chittagong on Saturday and Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus will speak at the 11th Developing-8 (D-8) Summit beginning on Thursday in Cairo, Egypt.

The chief adviser is to fly from Dhaka to Cairo, Egypt early Wednesday Deputy Press Secretary Apurba Jahangir informed UNB but did not elaborate. 

Dr Yunus may have several side meetings on the sidelines of the summit and the preparations are afoot, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said. 

This week is a critical one for the D-8 given the 48th Session of the D-8 Commission held in Cairo. 

In the next few days, the following meetings will transpire which will be topped off by the 21st Session of the D-8 Council of Foreign Ministers on December 18, and the much-awaited 11th D-8 Summit on December 19.

These meetings will involve convening leaders to enhance economic relations and find out common vision for growth in the Member States.

The D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation or Developing 8 is a co-operation organisation between Bangladesh; Egypt; Indonesia; Iran; Malaysia; Nigeria; Pakistan and Turkey.

Among the confirmed speakers for the Summit in joining Prof Yunus will be Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. 

Shehbaz Sharif will travel to Cairo on the 18th inst to attend the Developing Eight (D8) Summit till the 20th inst. The D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation was announced through the official proclamation in the Istanbul Declaration of Summit of Heads of State/Government on 15 June 1997. Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, among others, is scheduled to join Prof Yunus at the Summit. 

Shehbaz Sharif will visit Cairo from December 18-20 to participate in the Developing Eight (D8) Summit.

The establishment of the D-8  Organisation for Economic Cooperation was announced officially through the Istanbul Declaration of Summit of Heads of State/Government on 15 June 1997.

Earlier, Egypt offered Chief Adviser Prof Yunus an invitation to join the D-8 Summit.

At the Summit, Indonesia will also assume the chairmanship of the D-8 from the current chair Egypt for the 2026-2027.

The D-8 organization’s chairmanship will commence in Indonesia on January 1, 2026.
