Thousands protested in Islamabad, demanding Imran Khan’s release, calling charges against him politically motivated.

Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, streets were full of thousands of demonstrators on Sunday as protesters were calling for former Prime Minister Imran Khan to be released. The huge rally was organized by Imran Khan’s political party known as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and was only their first major demonstration after the disputed general elections in February. For many the rally symbolized resistance against what PTI has claimed are politically motivated charges meant to bar Khan from assuming power.

The Rally’s Call: Freedom for Imran Khan

At the heart of the protest was a singular demand: the immediate release from prison of the head of the PTI, Imran Khan, who has been behind bars for more than a year. Some people believe that the imprisonment of the former prime minister is a continuation of the conspiracy to make sure that he does not get back into office again. Such a charged setting of the rally was perhaps best described by Hammad Azhar, Khan’s associate who fired up the audience with his speech.

Hammad Azhar’s Message

‘We will not rest until Khan is out of jail’, Azhar proclaimed to the thousands of supporters their sentiments similar to the rest of the PTI followers. Since that speech set the protest tone down, Imran Khan painted himself as the only savior that Pakistan has in its current time, and the rest, as per the perception of many, as corrupt and incompetent political beings. At the rally, the spirit and the drive were felt with everyone chanting in unison for justice and political accountability.

The PTI’s First Major Show of Strength Since February

This was PTI’s first significant show of strength since the less-than-credible February elections in which PTI accused the government of rigging the polls. Most of the protesters called the event a milestone, proof that PTI still holds significant support because there are continuing efforts to dampen its power in the country. To a large extent, the mobilisation at the rally as well as the energy exhibited by the show of cards strengthened PTI’s assertion that Khan still plays a crucial role in Pakistani politics.

Facebook and Twitter were flooded with pictures and videos of PTI supporters moving towards Islamabad from different cities of the country. Videos that have circulated on social media including X (previously Twitter) presented dedicated followers and enthusiasts, ready and able to cross barriers and limitations set by the government.

The Dirty Work of the Government to Subdue the Rally

Some of the measures taken by the Islamabad administration as a result of the huge turnout by the supporters of Mr. Imran Khan are given here Shipping containers were used to close entry points to the city while the riot police were employed to enhance order in the city. But it did not make it easy for the authorities to stop it as they were resisted.

Defying the Obstacles

Videos that went viral on social media indicated dozens of PTI activists shoving the containers away to open the paths to carry on with the protest. But even when the government tried to stop it, the people of Pakistan did not demur and the supporters of Khan continued to advance toward Islamabad which further swelled the ranks of protestors.

The Charges Against Imran Khan: Is This a Case of Politics Too?

Another political drama was the no-confidence vote, which resulted in Imran Khan stepping down from the Prime Minister’s position in April 2022; Before that, he was a famous cricketer who decided to try becoming a politician. However, the misfortunes in his political life did not stop there. He has been in detention since August 2023 after being charged with inciting violence on the 9th of May 2023 when supporters were suspected to have attacked military bases during a political crisis.

Khan and his supporters have strongly refuted such claims. The PTI has said that these charges are a part of the agenda to dent the image of Imran Khan and ensure that he does not come to power again. The infamous case of his deteriorating health is based on his incarceration in prison lately, although several of his convictions were either suspended or overturned in the past few months the process is still ongoing.

A Case Complicated by Power Struggles

This was made worse by the arrest and trial of a former spy chief, who was thought to be working closely with Khan when the latter served as the country’s prime minister. The court martial of the ex-spy chief put an additional spin on Khan’s perilous situation, which many saw as part of an inter-extended political rivalry between the factions in the Pakistani government.

However, the public, who prefer to support Imran Khan with an increasing determination continues to swell in number despite all legalities. His supporters think that he has been politically gamed and as a result of this, continuous court cases have enhanced his hardship image of a leader under pressure.

Government’s Move to Ban PTI: A Blow to Democracy?

Amid the protests, the Pakistani government continued significantly neutralizing its repression against PTI and in July began calling for the party to be banned outright. Federal minister for information announced during the press conference that PTI should be banned for its role in violent protests in 2022 and betrayal of leakages.

The domestic and international community widely condemned this decision to ban the party. When the possible ban was condemned by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, they warned that it is ‘an enormous blow to democratic norms’ they also described it as ‘political desperation’.

International Outcry

Besides the domestic reaction to this matter, even a United Nations panel of rights experts also raised concerns about Khan’s detention. In July the panel issued a statement in which they said that it had no legal grounds to arrest Mr. Khan and the apparent motive was to prevent him from standing in an election.

Conclusion

Islamabad riots in the last few weeks are evidence of polarization in Pakistan politics. In connection with all these legal and political processes related to Imran Khan, his supporters continue to fight for his release and the continuation of the process for the proper democratization of Pakistan. Whether the government will listen to their demands or continue with the aggression against Khan and his party is not yet clear. However, one thing is clear: The politics of Pakistan is, however, not free from Imran Khan yet.
